The Labour MP for Runcorn and Helsby, Mike Amesbury, is lining up a lucrative boxing match with two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, The Yorkshire Tribune can reveal. Amesbury is currently suspended from his MP duties after a video surfaced on The Independent seemingly showing Amesbury punching a man to the ground.
Earlier this week, Cheshire Police charged Amesbury with section 39 assault; the heavy-handed MP will appear in a magistrate’s court at a later date. With his political career in tatters, our sources claim Amesbury is seriously considering a clash with Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia in early 2025.
“He [Amesbury] grew up in Castleford and attended Bradford University, so he knows how to handle himself. If you look at the publicly available MP expenses reports, you will see Amesbury has an invoice for £29.99 for a pair of boxing gloves,” our anonymous source told us.
Amesbury Has a “Mean Left Hook”
Readily available CCTV footage allegedly shows Amesbury striking a member of the public with a left hook, knocking the man to the ground. Amesbury then repeatedly punches the man as he lies dazed and confused on the cobbled road.
“You won’t ever threaten me again, will you?” Amesbury is heard shouting, “You won’t threaten your MP ever again, will you? Anthony Joshua, if you see this, I’ll smash your f***ing face in; bring it, bitch.”
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, is thought to be keen on setting up a mega-money clash between his fighter and the 55-year-old MP. Hearn has apparently spoken of Amesbury’s “mean left hook,” but also believes the disgraced MP will be easy to wind up in the build-up and during the fight.
How Would Joshua Fare Against the Disgraced MP
The 6ft 6in, 111 kg man mountain that is Anthony Joshua has a significant height, weight, and reach advantage over the podgy MP. Up to September 2018, when Joshua boasted a 22-0 record, you’d have rightly believed the professional boxer would wipe the floor with Amesbury. However, Joshua seems to have forgotten how to box, and has looked like someone who won a competition to step into the ring during his last ten fights.
First, Joshua lost to Andy Ruiz Jr., a man whose training regime consisted of eating KFC Bargain Buckets. Oleksandr Usyk twice outclassed Hearn’s cash cow, relieving him of his titles.
Joshua unconvincingly won four consecutive fights, but we reckon our nan would have given any of his opponents a run for their money. The last time he stepped into the ring, Daniel Dubois knocked out Joshua in the fifth round, leaving the big man sprawled on the canvas and most boxing pundits questioning if Joshua should retire before he gets seriously hurt.
Joshua is worth £175 million, so he doesn’t need the money, but he does love fighting bums because he seems to have a chance with those. A clash with Tyson Fury or a third arse-kicking from Usyk is unlikely to happen, so why not take on an old, out-of-shape man to boost his ego?
